Pharmacy Residency Program

Mission

The PGY1 pharmacy residency program Valley Baptist Medical Center - Brownsville is an ASHP -accredited program and is affiliated with the University of Texas College of Pharmacy. The program builds on the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for PGY2 pharmacy residency training.

This 12-month postgraduate training experience is designed to develop the following competencies:

  • Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care
  • Leadership and Management
  • Teaching, Education, and Dissemination of Knowledge
  • Pharmacy Research
  • Management of Medical Emergencies

What to Expect

Rotations

Required (5): Six weeks in length

  • Medical ICU
  • Cardiology
  • Internal medicine
  • Infectious disease
  • Administration/medication safety

Elective (3): Five to six weeks in length

  • Surgical ICU
  • Neonatal ICU
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Neuro ICU
  • Pain management/Palliative care

Additional activities:

  • Research project (1)
  • Medication Use Evaluation (MUE) (1)
  • Seminar presentation (1)
  • Formulary management project (1)
  • Clinical staffing: every third weekend
  • BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Community outreach activity
  • Teaching certificate (optional)

Requirements

To take part in our pharmacy residency, we require:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
  • Licensure/eligibility for licensure in Texas
  • Registered with PhORCAS and the National Matching Service
  • Exceptional knowledge, communication skills, and leadership qualities
