The nationally recognized Valley Baptist Neuroscience Institute is home to one of the largest and most experienced Neuroscience team in South Texas. Our clinical experts offer extensive diagnostic and treatment services in neurological diseases, spinal surgeries, stroke and stroke warning signs, endovascular neurology, epilepsy, headaches, brain injuries and more. In addition to being a research institute for Neurological care, we have the experience, technology, and know-how to care for you or a loved one, right here in the Rio Grande Valley.

Additionally, the Valley Baptist Neuroscience Institute’s ongoing research and clinical trials are advancing treatment for patients not just here in the Valley, but across the globe. The research conducted by the Valley Baptist Neuroscience team has changed the standard of care in stroke treatment and has increased the window of time for stroke intervention leading to improved patient outcomes (for more information, please visit SWIFT PRIME study and DAWN study).

The Valley Baptist Neuroscience Institute and research program are both testaments to our hospital’s commitment to improving the standard of care for all neurological conditions and developing new treatment plans to restore the quality of health and life to the people we serve.

  • The Valley’s Most Experienced Comprehensive Stroke Center since 2016, which makes it the Rio Grande Valley’s FIRST Comprehensive (Level I) Stroke Facility Certified by DNV and the Texas Health Human Services Commission.
  • Two Stroke Designated Hospitals across Cameron County:
    • Valley Baptist Medical Center – Harlingen: Comprehensive Stroke Center (DNV)
    • Valley Baptist Medical Center – Brownsville: Primary Stroke Center (TJC)
  • Opened the FIRST in-house Neurocritical Intensive Care Unit in the Valley in 2012.
  • Established the FIRST 24/7 Endovascular stroke intervention in the Valley in 2013.
  • The FIRST health system in Texas to utilize Artificial Intelligence, developed by Viz.ai, in 2018.
  • The FIRST health system with the most advanced imaging to expedite stroke care (3T MRI) and CT Perfusion Mapping
  • Continued participation in groundbreaking clinical research in the treatment of strokes:
    • ONLY Stroke Center in Texas to participate in the study to prove endovascular is superior to IV Stroke Therapy (SWIFT PRIME) changing to guidelines for acute ischemic stroke treatment (link to New England Journal of Medicine article on study)

  • A CARF-certified Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit specializing in stroke rehabilitation helping our patients' return home with the best possible outcome.
  • Successfully treated more than 8,000 cases with significant experience in endovascular treatment of ischemic strokes, intracerebral and subarachnoid hemorrhages.
  • Largest Neurosciences team and award-winning, nationally recognized specialists (endovascular, neuro-hospitalist, neurology, and neurosurgery) in the Valley.
