Top 10 Exercise Trends for 2022
The American College of Sports Medicine does an annual survey of members to understand trends for exercise. Survey respondents include doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, personal trainers and coaches. What’s trending for 2022? See below and be inspired to stay physically fit.
1. Wearable technology While technology won’t get you fit on its own, many people find wearable technology motivating to move more. And it provides a way to track goals and progress over time. |
2. Home exercise gyms Working out at home makes it convenient to seize an opportunity whenever works best for your schedule. Options include an exercise bike, treadmill or multipurpose equipment. |
3. Outdoor activities Outdoor activities can be organized such as group walks, rides or hiking. Or get going on your own with biking, walking or jogging. |
4. Strength training with free weights Strength training can include free weights such as barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells or a medicine ball. Instructors can incorporate these weights into a routine and show the correct form to use the equipment. |
5. Exercise for weight loss After staying at home, mostly sitting, many of us have gained weight. This 2022, many people have decided to shed that extra weight loss by combining an exercise program with a diet plan. |
6. Personal training One-on-one training is still a trend as it becomes more accessible online, in health clubs, even at home. Personal training includes fitness and goal setting with a trainer. |
7. High-intensity interval training Also known as HIIT, it involves short periods of high-intensity workouts followed by a short rest period. It’s important to be aware of the risk of injury with these workouts. |
8. Bodyweight training This program uses body weight as resistance. The upside of this program is it uses minimal equipment. |
9. Online live and on-demand exercise classes Online training can be done almost anywhere and is accessible 24/7, which is why it became popular when gyms were temporarily closed. This program involves a trainer delivering instructions to a group or individual online. Find many free recordings on YouTube based on your fitness interest. |
10. Health/wellness coaching Accountability from a professional coach can take you a long way toward choosing a plan that works for you and then checking in to continue commitment to results. |
While exercise may be good for you, going from 0 to 10 right away would be risky for anyone. Start slow and gradually build up your stamina for these activities. And remember, when starting a new routine, always consult your physician first, especially if you have a heart condition or other illness.
