Pharmacy Residency Program

Build Upon Your Pharmacy Education

If you’ve obtained your licensure as a pharmacist and wish to further your training, consider the Post-Graduate Year One (PGY-1) Pharmacy Residency Program at Valley Baptist Medical Center—Brownsville. Our program provides systematic training for pharmacists pursuing a clinical career. Those who take part in the program develop skills for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Plus, it provides eligibility for board certification and Post-Graduate Year Two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training.

Competencies Developed

During the course of this 12-month postgraduate training experience, you can expect to develop the following competencies:

  • Leadership and management
  • Improved patient care
  • Teaching, education and dissemination of knowledge
  • Pharmacy research
  • Management of medical emergencies

What to Expect

Rotations: Six weeks in length

Required (5):

  • Adult critical care
  • Cardiology
  • Internal medicine
  • Infectious disease
  • Administration/medication safety

Elective (3):

  • Critical care (surgical, cardiac, neonatal)
  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Emergency medicine
  • Pain management/palliative care

Additional activities:

  • Research project (1)
  • Medication use evaluation (1)
  • Seminar Presentation (1)
  • Clinical staffing: every third weekend
  • BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Teaching certificate (optional)

Requirements

To take part in our pharmacy residency, we require:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy
  • Licensure/eligibility for licensure in Texas
  • Registered with PhORCAS and the National Matching Service
  • Exceptional knowledge, communication skills, and leadership qualities
