Harlingen, TX – The New Year is here and whether you are trying to lose weight, get in shape or continue on your fitness plan it’s important to do it safely.

“It’s important to stay active in order to be healthy,” said Veronica Hernandez-Garza, Fitness Center Manager for Valley Baptist Health and Fitness Center. “Almost anyone, at any age, can get meaningful benefits from exercising safely.”

Valley Baptist Health and Fitness Center has some tips to help make your fitness journey fun and safe.

Picking an Activity – When picking an exercise make sure you select one for your level of fitness. If just starting out, select an exercise at a beginner level, as to not overdo it. If you have any previous injuries make sure you consult with a medical provider on a safe activity for your return to exercise.

Safety Precautions – Always warm up before doing any sort of exercise and cool down afterwards to lower the risk of strains and sprains. Take appropriate breaks during activity.

Staying Hydrated and Keep Your Energy Up – Drink water before, during and after your workout session, regardless if you feel thirsty. Always ensure you’ve had a small snack prior to any type of physical activity to ensure you have adequate energy for the activity.

Finding Variety – With any type of exercise, it is important to find variety as to incorporate all muscle groups and not overexert any one muscle group.

Don’t Overdo It – It’s important to exercise at a steady rate of progress to avoid over-exercising, which can lead to injury.

Wearing Proper Fitness Attire – Once you’ve selected your exercise of choice it’s important to make sure you have appropriate shoes and clothing for that activity.

“We have activities for all fitness levels and experts available to help you do it in a safe manner,” said Hernandez-Garza. “The important thing is to find an activity you enjoy and create a regular routine.
