Reflection of the Month - November 2006
A Thanksgiving Reflection“In everything give
thanks… 1 Thessalonians 5:18
The words “thank” and “think” are derived from the same root,
reminding us that thanksgiving comes from thinking about our
blessings. Helen Keller once said, “I have often thought it
would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and
deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. It
would make him more appreciative of sight and the joys of
sound.” What a profound thought to think that the mishaps and
struggles of life can lead us to a greater place of appreciating
when things are right. Unfortunately, I sometimes find myself
bothered and grumbling, when in the normal process of living,
things often do not go the way I would have chosen. As I was
recently reminded by a wise friend, how I choose to respond to
my struggles is reflection of my dependence upon Christ’s Spirit
within me. If I can find good even in the struggle, I reflect
positively upon Christ. If I respond in bitterness or in a
grumbling manner, I may reflect negatively upon Christ. The
Apostle Paul wrote, “In everything give thanks.” Like Paul, may
I encourage us to think about that for which we need to offer
thanks. Our attitude of gratitude just might make a positive
reflection upon the One who gives us much for which to be
grateful.
