The Oncology/Nephrology Unit is a 42 bed unit located on the
4th floor of the Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen's South Tower. Patient population includes
males and females from adolescent to elderly patients requiring non-intensive
medical and nursing care.
Our Main Goal
Our goal is to provide patient centered care for predominant medical
diagnosis which include cancer, nephrology, and acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome. We also provide comprehensive care for
symptom management, pain management, and care of the dying patient and
their family. Our services include the administration of
chemotherapeutic agents by Oncology Nursing Society validated/certified
Chemotherapy Registered Nurses. In addition the Oncology/Nephrology Unit
is staffed by qualified Licensed Vocational Nurses dedicated to cancer
and renal care.
An initial course and practicum designed to prepare registered nurses
to administer chemotherapy is offered to all new nurses. The course and
related practicum are designed to teach the nurse necessary knowledge
and skills to administer chemotherapy safely and expertly.
Our unit staff also cares for chronic or acute cases through the use
of the nursing process, administration of medication, chemotherapeutic
agents, peritoneal dialysis, implementation of necessary treatments and
procedures, prevention of infection and injury.
