Cancer Services
The Oncology/Nephrology Unit is a 42 bed unit located on the 4th floor of the Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen's South Tower. Patient population includes males and females from adolescent to elderly patients requiring non-intensive medical and nursing care.

Our Main Goal

Our goal is to provide patient centered care for predominant medical diagnosis which include cancer, nephrology, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. We also provide comprehensive care for symptom management, pain management, and care of the dying patient and their family. Our services include the administration of chemotherapeutic agents by Oncology Nursing Society validated/certified Chemotherapy Registered Nurses. In addition the Oncology/Nephrology Unit is staffed by qualified Licensed Vocational Nurses dedicated to cancer and renal care.

An initial course and practicum designed to prepare registered nurses to administer chemotherapy is offered to all new nurses. The course and related practicum are designed to teach the nurse necessary knowledge and skills to administer chemotherapy safely and expertly.

Our unit staff also cares for chronic or acute cases through the use of the nursing process, administration of medication, chemotherapeutic agents, peritoneal dialysis, implementation of necessary treatments and procedures, prevention of infection and injury.
