The Licensed Vocational Nurse should perform only those acts for which she/he was prepared.
Under the directed supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice registered nurse,
physician assistant, physician, dentist, or podiatrist supervision, the following functions
may be carried out by the LVN who has had sufficient preparation to do them safely.
Independent practice without supervision is not permitted.
A. Helping to provide for emotional & physical comfort & safety of the patient including:
- Understanding human relationships between patients, their families, and personnel.
- Understanding cultural backgrounds, spiritual needs, and respecting the religious beliefs of the patient.
- Understanding the social and economic problems of patients.
- Giving attention to the general health care of patients, assisting with cleanliness, grooming, rest, and nourishment/elimination.
- Maintaining an attractive and comfortable environment for the patient, giving consideration to cleanliness, ventilation, lighting, repairs, supplies and equipment.
B. Observing, recording & reporting symptoms, reactions & changes including:
- General physical and mental conditions of the patient.
- Stresses in relationship between the patient and personnel, the family, or visitors.
C. Performing selected nursing procedures in those circumstances where the judgment of a professional nurse is not required including:
- Administration of medications and treatments prescribed by the doctor.
- Preparation and care of patients receiving specialized treatments administered by the doctor or professional nurse.
- Performing special nursing techniques in caring for patients with communicable diseases.
- Practicing first aid measures.
- Preparation and after-care of equipment including aseptic technique.
D. Assisting with the rehabilitation plan including:
- Encouraging interests and special aptitudes of patients.
- Encouraging patients to help themselves.
- Practicing good body mechanics and body alignment, with prevention of deformities.
E. Assuming responsibility for personal & vocational growth & development including:
- Actively furthering knowledge through reading and study.
- Participating in inservice programs, workshops and other educational programs.
