Sleep Center

At Valley Baptist Medical Center, we know that sleep problems plague more than 70 million Americans. That’s why we are dedicated to helping people get a better night’s sleep, every night, at our Sleep Centers.

That’s Valley Baptist Care.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Sleep Disorders

The Sleep Center at VBMC-Harlingen was Harlingen’s first facility dedicated exclusively to the diagnosis and treatment of adult and pediatric sleep disorders. Opening in 1996, this state-of-the-art diagnostic facility has evaluated and assisted sleep doctors in treating thousands of patients.  Our Valley Medical Center-Brownsville Sleep Center has provided services for more than a decade in a comfortable suite located in the Professional Tower at VBMC-B.

Every patient is unique and receives a thorough evaluation to provide the optimal sleep treatment and recommendations. We recommend that your personal physician refer you, but you may also contact us directly.

Since sleep problems require long-term management, treatment is discussed with your physician when possible. A member of the American Board of Sleep Medicine is on staff to help both patients and their physicians understand the diagnosis and treatment of specific sleep disorders.

What is a Sleep Study?

Polysomnography or a “sleep study,” is a test that measures bodily functions during sleep. The testing is non-invasive and painless. Some of the measurements taken may include brain waves, eye movement, sleep stages, airflow (nose and mouth), heart rate, chin and leg muscle activity, abdominal and chest wall movement, oxygen saturation and ETCO2.

Depending on the nature of your sleep disorder, you may need to have one or two nights of polysomnography done on an outpatient basis in a private bedroom at one of our sleep centers. Trained technicians using the latest diagnostic equipment will monitor your sleep patterns from a separate control room for the duration of the study. We will make you as comfortable as possible while determining the most successful treatment for your sleep disorder.

Sleep studies are covered by most major insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, Tricare, Humana, and most managed care plans. Our staff will assist you in verifying coverage, obtaining pre-approval, filing claims and addressing any concerns you may have regarding your sleep studies.
