Cath Lab

A blockage in one of the coronary arteries can lead to a heart attack with little or no warning. At Valley Baptist, we have the physicians and the facilities to remove blockages quickly and efficiently. In fact, our talented cath-lab team has more than 60 years of combined experience.

How Catheterization Works

In the cardiac catheterization (cardiac cath) lab a slender catheter, or tube, is inserted through a blood vessel and guided through to the heart. That allows coronary arteries to be viewed by using a “contrast dye” that’s been injected into your bloodstream. Blockages or narrowing will become visible to your cardiologist, who then can determine the best method to correct the problem.

Valley Baptist Medical Center has five cardiac-cath labs, including the only bi-plane cath lab/neuroangiography suite, which allows for two different views of the brain during the same procedure, in the Rio Grande Valley.

In addition, one of our cardiac cath labs also is equipped for specialized surgery that involves blood vessels outside the heart area, such as those at or near the kidneys, legs and arms. This lab also is used for electrophysiological studies, procedures that test the heart’s electrical system.

Cath lab services also include:
