VBMC-Brownsville Teams Win National Awards

Brownsville, Texas, May 27, 2009 -- The efforts of physicians, nurses and other staff members at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville have resulted in five national awards for the Brownsville hospital, including 5-star awards for scoring in the top 10% in the nation for heart and vascular care in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and for Outpatient Laboratory services.

In addition, the Emergency Dept., Inpatient Units and Outpatient Services at Valley Baptist-Brownsville received 4-star awards for exemplary care and service from Professional Research Consultants (PRC), a national healthcare research firm based in Omaha, Nebraska.  The awards are figured on the percentage of patients who rated the facilities as “excellent” for overall quality of care delivered by the hospital staff in 2008.

This marks the fourth year in a row that the VBMC-Brownsville Emergency team has received a national PRC award – and the second year in a row for the inpatient nursing units. The inpatient units at Valley Baptist-Brownsville include the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), the 2 Tower and 3 Tower nursing units; Labor and Delivery, Post Partum, Nursery, Neonatal ICU, and Pediatrics; and Telemetry.

“It is the hard work and dedication of all VBMC-Brownsville employees and physicians that results in such high quality patient care and service,” said Leslie Bingham, CEO for Valley Baptist-Brownsville.  “Thank you to our staff, physicians and volunteers for their determination and commitment in constantly striving to improve our services.”

The awards are based on research that is conducted to obtain the opinions of patients at Valley Baptist and to assess their perceptions of the care they received.  Valley Baptist uses the data not only to recognize a job well-done, but to continuously improve and enhance patient care and satisfaction.

The national research company, PRC, gathers its data by contacting patients at hundreds of hospitals across the country for confidential telephone interviews.

“Congratulations to Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville on being a 2009 PRC Excellence in Healthcare award winner,” said Joe M. Inguanzo, Ph.D., President and CEO of PRC.  “Your facility’s focus on excellence is making it a better place for your patients to be treated, a better place to practice medicine, and a better place to work.”
