Harlingen, June 14, 2010 -- The quality service and clinical excellence provided by Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen employees and physicians has resulted in Valley Baptist-Harlingen receiving five awards for emergency, inpatient, and outpatient care.
VBMC-Harlingen’s Emergency Dept. team has won a 4-Star Excellence Award from Professional Research Consultants (PRC), a national healthcare research firm based in Omaha, Nebraska. The 4-Star award is given annually to healthcare facilities that score in the top 25 percent in the nation. The award is figured on the percentage of patients who rated the facilities as “excellent” for overall quality of care delivered by the hospital staff in 2009.
This marks the fifth year out of the past six years that the VBMC-Harlingen Emergency team has won a national award from PRC.
“These awards are based on research that is conducted to obtain the opinions of the patients at Valley Baptist and to assess their perceptions of our patient care,” said Bill Adams, CEO for VBMC-Harlingen. He noted that Valley Baptist is able to use this information -- not only to recognize a job well-done -- but also to continuously improve and enhance patient care and satisfaction. “We are extremely proud of our entire staff, including employees, physicians and volunteers, for their dedication to patient care and service,” Mr. Adams added.
The national research company, PRC, gathers its data by contacting patients at hundreds of hospitals across the country for confidential telephone interviews.
In addition, Valley Baptist-Harlingen won four PRC Achievement Awards, which are based on entries submitted by hospitals and other health care facilities across the nation. The achievement awards recognize organizations which have enhanced their patients’ perception of care by focusing on “key drivers of excellence.” Each initiative is graded by three judges who consider innovation, originality, impact on patients’ perceptions, and impact on staff or work environment, among other criteria. Valley Baptist’s four winning entries were:
- “Gold PRC Award for Inpatient Telemetry Services,” for a team effort between Valley Baptist’s Telemetry nursing unit
and Valley Baptist’s Environmental Services Dept.
- “Gold Award for Inpatient Orthopedic Services,” for an initiative by the VBMC-Harlingen Orthopedic Unit
- “Silver PRC Award for Inpatient Telemetry Services,” for another initiative by the Telemetry unit, this
time in partnership with Valley Baptist’s Food Service Dept. and Patient Transport Team
- “Silver Award for Outpatient Diagnostic Services,” for an initiative by the VBMC-Harlingen Endoscopy Dept.
