The Valley Baptist Family Practice Residency Program
Recognizing a shortage of primary care physicians in the Rio Grande
Valley, Valley Baptist established the Family Practice Residency Program
to train young physicians and to expand access to primary health care.
Not only does the program recruit additional physicians in the short
term, but also many decide to stay to establish their permanent practice

Not-For-Profit Commitment to Our Community
Valley Baptist Health System is the largest not-for-profit health
provider in the Rio Grande Valley. That means funds stay here in the Rio
Grande Valley – no profits are sent to out-of-town investors. Instead,
those resources are re-invested in the technology, facilities, outreach
programs and people who keep our community healthy and save lives. Among
many other things, this investment enables Valley Baptist Health System
to acquire the latest equipment and technologies and enables us to staff
with a higher ratio of nurses to patients than most hospitals, certainly
higher than any other in the Rio Grande Valley.
Patient Family Assistance Fund
When the Valley Baptist Foundation was made aware of a family in
need, it quickly went to work. Valley Baptist Home Health was serving a
family that was in dire straits; it had no income, little food or
clothing, and no stove to cook food.
The Foundation sent an e-mail to VBHS employees to make them aware of
the immediate need of this family. In a matter of hours, employees met
and surpassed the need with their gifts of cash, food, and clothing. The
excess funds allowed the Foundation to set up a permanent Patient Family
Assistance Fund to help other families we serve that have similar needs.
Smile Fund - Cleft and Craniofacial Team
Every so often a very special person comes along that makes a
tremendous difference in the lives of many people. Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Carlos Cruz is one of those people. View Story Here
