VALLEY BAPTIST TEAMS WIN NATIONAL AWARDS FOR EMERGENCY, INPATIENT CARE AND OUTPATIENT RADIOLOGY CARE

Brownsville/Harlingen, March 25, 2008  -- The quality service and clinical excellence provided by Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville and Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen employees and physicians have again qualified Valley Baptist for national recognition. Due to the efforts of the teams in these areas, Valley Baptist-Brownsville has received awards for emergency and inpatient care, while Valley Baptist-Harlingen has received national recognition for outpatient radiology care as well as emergency care.

VBMC-Brownsville’s Emergency Dept. team received a 5-Star Customer Service Award from Professional Research Consultants (PRC), a national healthcare research firm based in Omaha, Nebraska. The 5-Star award is given annually to healthcare facilities that score in the top 10 percent in the nation. The award is figured on the percentage of patients who rated the facilities as “excellent” for overall quality of care delivered by the hospital staff in 2007.

This marks the third year in a row that the VBMC-Brownsville Emergency team has received a national PRC award.

If patients need further hospital care after being treated in the Emergency Room, they are admitted to an inpatient nursing unit at VBMC-Brownsville – and those inpatient units received their own national award. This 4-Star Award for Overall Quality of Care recognizes the commitment of employees and physicians in providing patients with exemplary care and service. The inpatient units at Valley Baptist-Brownsville include the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), the 2 Tower and 3 Tower nursing units; Labor and Delivery, Post Partum, Nursery, Neonatal ICU, and Pediatrics; and Telemetry.

“It is the hard work and dedication of all VBMC-Brownsville employees and physicians that results in such high quality patient care and service,” said Leslie Bingham, CEO for Valley Baptist-Brownsville. “Thank you to our staff and physicians for their determination and commitment to constantly strive to improve our services.”

Meanwhile, in Harlingen, VBMC-Harlingen’s Outpatient Radiology Team received a 5-Star Award for outstanding care for Valley patients, while the Emergency Dept. team received a 4-Star Award.

This marks the fourth year in a row that the VBMC-Harlingen Emergency team has won a national award from PRC.

“These awards are based on research that is conducted to obtain the opinions of the patients at Valley Baptist and to assess their perceptions of our patient care,” said Jim Wesson, CEO for VBMC-Harlingen. “We are able to use this data -- not only to recognize a job well-done -- but also to continuously improve and enhance patient care and satisfaction at Valley Baptist. We are extremely proud of our entire staff, including employees, physicians and volunteers, for their dedication to patient care and service. ”

The national research company, PRC, gathers its data by contacting patients at hundreds of hospitals across the country for confidential telephone interviews. For more information on the awards and quality improvement results at Valley Baptist, please visit www.ValleyBaptist.net.
