Mental Health Workshop in Brownsville To Address Depression, Suicide,
Self-Inflicted Behavior

Brownsville, May 22, 2008
-- “Depression and Suicide,” “Self-Inflicted Behavior,” and “Bullying in the Work Place” will be among the topics addressed during a workshop on the “Many Faces of Mental Health,” which will be held this Friday, May 23, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville East Campus, located at 1 Ted Hunt Boulevard.

Two psychiatrists will speak at the event, which is being hosted for health care professionals in the Valley by Valley Baptist Inpatient Behavioral Health Services. Dr. Daniel Villarreal will speak on “Depression and Suicide,” while Dr. David Moron will speak on “Self-Inflicted Behavior.” Andrea Lerma, APRN, BC, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, will speak on “Bullying in the Workplace.”

The workshop will also feature an exhibitor hall with information on a variety of resources, programs, and services related to mental health in the Valley.

“The Inpatient Behavioral Health Services facility is a reflection of the Valley Baptist commitment to not only serve our patients, but our community,” said Leslie G. Bingham, Chief Executive Officer at VBMC-Brownsville. “We will offer educational programs for mental health care providers in our community, so that we can work together to heal the mentally ill.”

Becky Tresnicky, Director of Valley Baptist Behavioral Health Services, said the workshop is part of Valley Baptist’s efforts to address the great needs in the mental health services field in the Brownsville area and throughout the Valley. Valley Baptist-Brownsville’s 37-bed Inpatient Behavioral Health Services Facility opened in September 2007 and treats adults who meet specific criteria for treatment at an inpatient facility, including those with depression and chronic mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. The facility recently began offering outpatient psychiatric services on a limited basis.

In addition, Valley Baptist’s Heritage Program for Senior Adults, also located at the East Campus on Ted Hunt Blvd., provides outpatient treatment to older adults who suffer from psychiatric, emotional, or behavioral disorders.

This is the second in a series of Behavioral Health Summits held by Valley Baptist Inpatient Behavioral Health Services, and includes continuing education credits for nurses, social workers, and licensed professional counselors.
