VALLEY BAPTIST NAMED AMONG TOP 100 HOSPITALS IN NATION
Ann Arbor, Michigan, November 27, 2007 --Valley Baptist
Medical Center-Harlingen has been named one of the top 100
hospitals in the nation – and the only one south of Houston –
for saving lives and reducing complications in heart patients.
The results from the “Thomson
Top 100 Hospitals” awards will be published in a national
magazine, Modern Healthcare, and the award will be presented to
Valley Baptist at the 100 Top Hospitals Summit in Colorado
Springs, Co., June 4-6, 2008.
“This tremendous honor of being the only hospital in South Texas
to receive this award is another indicator of the dedication of
the physicians, nurses and staff at Valley Baptist to provide
the very best care for each and every patient,” said Jim Wesson,
Chief Executive Officer for
Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen. “Providing
outstanding patient care has always been our primary mission.”
Valley Baptist – along with more than 1,000 other hospitals
across the nation – was analyzed and scored by
Thomson Healthcare,
an international company with offices in Stamford, Connecticut
and Ann Arbor, Michigan; for patient survival rates, preventing
infections, and other measures related to heart attack,
congestive heart failure, bypass surgery, angioplasties, and
other coronary interventions.
Jean Chenoweth, Senior Vice President for Thomson Healthcare,
congratulated Valley Baptist’s physicians, staff, and board
members for being a “high-performing cardiovascular hospital.”
“Your community enjoys access to cardiovascular services with
processes of care and outcomes at national benchmark levels,”
Ms. Chenoweth added.
According to a study conducted by Thomson Healthcare, if all
cardiovascular hospitals achieved the same results as the 100
Top Hospitals award winners such as Valley Baptist,
more than 7,000 lives would be saved and nearly 750 medical
complications – such as infections and severe bleeding following
surgery – could be avoided every year.
The study also showed that hospitals with superior performance
such as Valley Baptist performed “recommended core measures” –
practices and treatments that have been scientifically proven to
benefit heart patients – more often than the non-winning
hospitals.
“Patients can feel comfortable that a Top 100 Hospitals
Cardiovascular award-winning hospital (such as Valley Baptist)
has adopted a team approach to heart care and is performing well
against national standards,” Thomson Healthcare states in its
Guide to the Thomson 100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular
Benchmarks for Success 2007. “Its management, doctors, nurses,
and hospital employees work together to constantly measure,
review and improve performance to make it a better place to be
treated for heart disease.”
“Winners of the Top 100 Hospitals Cardiovascular award are like
athletes who win a national championship,” the Guide adds. “It
is exceedingly difficult to win this award even once and it
should be a point of pride in the hospital and the community.”
Valley Baptist-Harlingen had previously been ranked as the #1
hospital in the entire nation for treating heart failure
patients and #2 in Texas for treating heart attack patients by
the U.S. Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services, in Jan. 2007.
“This is additional proof that Valley residents have access to
the highest quality of healthcare right here at home,” Mr.
Wesson added.
