Groundbreaking Held for New Wellness Center at Treasure
Hills

HARLINGEN, Dec. 19, 2005 – Groundbreaking for a major
new wellness center at the Treasure Hills Country Club in Harlingen was
held Dec. 19 at the parking lot of the old
Treasure Hills Country Club, 3009 Augusta National Drive.
Plans call for the new 34,000-square-foot wellness center in the Treasure Hills area to
open in 2006. Valley Baptist has partnered with a local fitness center,
Athletix Gym of Harlingen, to develop the new facility. A contribution
by Bobby and Robin Farris will help make the wellness center a reality.
The center will include an indoor exercise pool, large workout areas
for strength and cardiovascular equipment, spacious group exercise
studios and a spinning studio, a multi purpose gym, locker rooms and
baby sitting. In addition, the complex will have an outpatient physical
therapy clinic and corporate wellness clinic. The setting at Treasure
Hills will be spectacular with views and vista onto the golf course and
surrounding terrain from various parts of the complex.
“As a part of its overall mission, Valley Baptist is committed to
providing quality preventive health and wellness programs and services
to the residents of South Texas,” said James Springfield, FACHE,
President and CEO for Valley Baptist Health System. “Our goal is to
address the fitness needs of all men, women and children regardless of
exercise experience, physical condition or age.”
The Treasure Hills property became part of Valley Baptist Health
System through a donation and partial acquisition in 2003. The property
includes a total of 273 acres, including 56 acres of undeveloped land,
22 developed lots, and a golf course, which Valley Baptist is leasing to
professional golf pros.
In addition to the wellness center, Valley Baptist’s plans for the
property include developing additional meeting facilities to serve the
needs of the health system and the community. Access to the Treasure
Hills property will be increased through the City of Harlingen’s plans
to extend Treasure Hills Boulevard out to FM 509.
Wendy Brons, the founder of Athletix Gym, will serve as Director for
the new center.
