Latin American Beauty Queen to Visit Golden Palms Retirement Center across from Valley Baptist

HARLINGEN, May 13, 2004 –  A Latin American beauty queen, Miss Belleza Latina Veronica Loredo, will visit Harlingen on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. and meet with nursing home residents and retirement home residents at the Golden Palms Retirement and Health Center, 2101 Treasure Hills Boulevard, across from Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Miss Belleza Latina - Veronica LoredoMrs. Loredo won the 2004 “Latin Beauty” pageant representing the country of Mexico, although she also has roots in the Rio Grande Valley and is currently residing in San Benito.

The Miss Belleza Latina pageant is an event which allows “all Latinas to be able to express their beauty, cultural pride, personal accomplishments, and be judged as equals by their peers,” said the national director of the pageant, Maria Torres.

Unlike some other beauty pageants, the Miss Belleza Latina pageant allows married women with children and single mothers to compete. In the case of Veronica Loredo, she is married and has four children.

“We are about creating role models in our communities, having someone that younger Latina women can admire and look up to, whether she is a single mother or not,” Ms. Torres added. “Miss Belleza Latina is an organization that understands our cultural background and works to enhance, recognize, and honor it.”

Mrs. Loredo said she enjoys “representing the Latina woman, and demonstrating by example that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.”

“I was born into a modest family and struggled throughout most of my life,” Mrs. Loredo added. “Due to my upbringing, I have learned that success is not measured by the designer clothes you wear or by how many diamonds you own. Instead real success is what you experience by putting your heart into accomplishing what you desire to achieve.”
